Confession Box: Ave Avelina+

She is Sister Avelina Osmeña Almendras, FMM—former campus minister of University of the East, Sister Ave, as most of us called her.
We were so happy when she met Father Bernard “Erps” Martin for the transition. We prayed that the entire members of the community can gather and have a one special intention for her. FG Delgado, Sister Ave’s last appointed spiritual assistant with working scholar function at Recto Campus, remembered those days of immersion with students in the community. We can always recount her sweet smile, selflessness, and thoughtfulness toward others. She supported us in joining the first batch of campus ministry student volunteers headed by Msgr. Vicente D. Bauson and Tita Becky Arquiza Baldonado+. One of the challenges during those days was to unite special interest groups in the campus.
Sister Ave founded Moral Science Teaching which originally started for primary school. A little later, she brought student volunteers to start teaching. As we grow in numbers, she proposed to include slots for secondary students. Afterwards, there were secondary students who started joining as student volunteers too.
Teaching is a challenge of patience. Moreover, filled with educational games, music, culture, arts, Filipino family, values and/or virtues such as magnanimity.
From our chat conversations with an alumna, “alas tres ng hapon ang libing sa lungsod ng Iligan”. An alumnus added, “based from the provincial superior of Iligan City, Wednesday morning when she (Sister Ave) was brought in to the hospital. Mataas ang blood sugar level. Then, nasundan ng cardiac arrest. The doctors can no longer revive the
Sister Ave was born on the 11th day of November, 1933. On the 15th day of April, 2015 when Sister Ave joined her creator. Thank you for showing us peace. We are truly grateful for your mentoring us of contentment. How can we ever forget how you reminded us in bringing
love to others?
